My name is Kenyatta Hurd (nee, Mickles). I have over 10 years of experience handling cases involving individuals and families in civil cases. I am an Attorney, Mediator, Guardian ad Litem, and Parenting Coordinator. I am licensed in Ohio.
I began my career as a public interest attorney in Cincinnati, Ohio. During my time there, I represented individuals in family law, public benefits, and other civil matters. The opportunity to provide legal services to people who were unable to afford an attorney solidified my dedication to standing up for justice and fairness in the legal system.
As an attorney, I have mostly provided representation in family law cases. This includes divorce and dissolution cases, child and spousal support, custody and parenting time, property division, etc. I have extensive experience in civil protection order litigation. I have experience in other civil matters, including contract law.
As a law professor at the University of Cincinnati College of Law, I directed and supervised aspiring attorneys. I taught students how to represent and litigate cases for individuals who were experiencing domestic violence. I have a lot of experience in working with individuals in domestic violence relationships. I have given numerous presentations on the topic of domestic violence and stalking to members of the legal community, advocates, local community councils, medical personnel, and police departments to name a few. I’ve had the opportunity to work with attorneys from many parts of the world in our efforts to make sure that victims of domestic violence receive competent legal representation.
I also have successfully represented clients in expungement and clemency cases. Many times, people are unaware of how certain convictions or plea agreements can affect them in their future educational and job endeavors. I often find it frustrating to see that people pay a lot of money for a degree, only to have problems gaining employment in that field due to a minor criminal record. By helping people obtain expungements, it opens the door to many employment and educational opportunities.
I have over 100 hours of training in mediation by The Supreme Court of Ohio. I decided to begin my mediation practice after seeing people in cases being frustrated with court decisions that potentially affects their lives. I feel that if people are given the time, opportunity, and guidance in a peaceful setting to discuss important issues, they will come to a mutually agreeable solution. Ultimately, it is a more cost effective process that allows the parties to reach an agreement they can live with. As a Parenting Coordinator, I help parents have an effective co-parenting relationship, settle disputes, and make parenting decisions in the best interest of the children.
Like most people, I am concerned about the safety and well-being of children. As a Guardian ad Litem, I am able to help determine what is best interest of children involved in court disputes concerning their care and safety. I handle private custody, delinquency, and dependency cases.
